Year 5 NAPLAN Practice: A Free Guide for Parents

If your child is heading into Year 5, NAPLAN is probably the first standardised test they've sat since Year 3 — and the first one that actually shows up on their school report in a way you can compare year to year. Here's what it tests, when it happens, and what actually helps kids prepare, without turning your lounge room into a test centre.

What Year 5 NAPLAN actually covers

Four parts, sat over a few days:

Reading. A written passage followed by comprehension questions, testing whether your child can pull out the main idea, spot detail, and make inferences — not just decode words.
✍️
Writing. One piece, either narrative or persuasive depending on the year, marked against a fixed set of criteria (ideas, structure, vocabulary, and mechanics like spelling and punctuation).

Language conventions. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation, tested directly rather than folded into writing.
🔢
Numeracy. Number, algebra, measurement, geometry, and statistics at a Year 5 level — some of it without a calculator.

The exact format shifts slightly year to year — check the official NAPLAN resources for the current version — but those four areas haven't changed.

When it happens: NAPLAN moves to March in the school calendar for most students now, earlier than the May sitting used in past years — so "start in Term 4 of Year 4" is a more realistic prep window than "start after the summer holidays." If you're reading this in Term 3 or 4, you're not early.

What actually helps (and what doesn't)

Short, regular sessions over cramming. 15–20 minutes a few times a week for two months beats a single weekend blitz the week before.

Practising under a loose time limit. Kids who've never worked against a clock lose time to panic, not to not knowing the answer.

Reviewing wrong answers, not just doing more. The review is where the learning happens, not the doing.

Writing practice specifically. It's the domain kids get the least incidental practice in day-to-day, and a bit of structure makes an outsized difference fast.

Doesn't help much

Real past NAPLAN papers, if you can even find them. ACARA doesn't release full past tests, so most "real past papers" online are unofficial reconstructions of varying accuracy.

Generic worksheets not modelled on the actual format. A Year 5 maths worksheet and a NAPLAN numeracy question can look similar and test completely different things.
